6 Handy Tips for Your Outdoor Space this Summer

As we're now in the middle of summer, I've sought some helpful advice from Lauren Metcalfe at Acorn Landscape Design to provide some helpful tips to enhance your outdoor space this summer.

As February rolls in, keep up the water for your plants and deadhead flowers to encourage repeat blooms. Now is your last chance to plan for autumn, by adding late-summer blooms or deciduous trees to ensure garden interest through the changing seasons. Here are my top six emerging design trends for 2024:

1. Sustainable Landscaping

Increasing focus on eco-friendly designs, incorporating native plants, and using environmentally conscious materials to promote biodiversity and reduce the environmental impact.

2. Outdoor Living Spaces

Growing popularity of creating functional outdoor areas, including kitchens, seating arrangements, and entertainment zones, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.

3. Low-Maintenance Gardens

The demand for low-maintenance landscapes is rising, with homeowners seeking designs that require minimal upkeep, utilizing durable plants and efficient irrigation systems.

4. Vertical Gardening

Maximizing space by incorporating vertical elements, such as living walls, trellises, and vertical planters, to add greenery and aesthetics to smaller residential areas.

5. Smart Landscapes

Integration of technology into landscapes, including smart irrigation systems, outdoor lighting controlled by apps, and automated features that enhance efficiency and convenience.

6. Wellness Gardens

Recognition of the mental and physical health benefits of spending time outdoors, leading to designs that prioritize relaxation, meditation spaces, and elements like water features to promote well-being.
